Instead of making you fumble around under the hood trying to find the latch, the lever pops out of the grille when you pull the release inside the car.

Most VWs do this too. The first time I popped the hood in my BIL’s mk4 Jetta I was like “what where is that come from!?

As much as I hate working on BMWs from this era (arguably the last of the true driver’s cars) they really do put some thought into making things a little easier for the hobbyist or mechanic to fix. No crazy shit like batteries in the fender (Chrysler...) or a commitment to designing motors with shitty timing belts over and over again, then fucking it up royally again upon switching to chains (audi).

I really do like that about mine. I have opened the hood on my Pathfinder about a million times, yet I still fumble around for the latch.
On the E46? Nah the latch comes to me.

One of the many details that show that BMW really put some thought into their cars. I also like that the cargo cover on the Tourings also doubles as a divider and can hook up behind the rear seats and the FRONT seats.
NEATO! Now, if they just could stop them turning into money pits around the 150k to 200k mile mark. BTW, I plan on ditching mine at around 150k miles and 13-14 years old. I’ve seen my mom keeping her beloved E36 530d manual touring for too long, and I just don’t want to there.

Mine’s at 17 years and 260k miles and still going strong!

Back when the kidneys used to raise with the hood. Pretty sure my E90 is just regular-style :(

I really liked this feature on my E46s too.

Do you do the work yourself or do you have to pay someone? My mom had to do the latter, until what we assume the injectors failed spectularly. It pumped almost a full tank of diesel through the exhaust within half a mile, trying to compress it along the way. Which is a shame because soooooo much money was spent on it before that.
Mine’s still perfect at slightly over 100k miles, had it for 13 months and almost 20k miles, but that’s to be expected from a one owner perfect BMW service history car. I tend to keep on top of maintenance as well, doing things rather sooner than required, so let’s see......

I do my own work when I can. I just had the intake ripped apart last week replacing the CCV valve.

Old Mercs used this. Problem is German plastic doesn’t hold up well to Arizona heat.

Then it breaks off and reminds you of true German car ownership.

I’m still scared I’ll snap that thing every time I have to open the hood. I reach my entire hand in and push it up at its base.
